Criminal Defense Fees
When you’re hiring a criminal defense attorney, you’re already worrying enough about the charges against you. If so, you might think that the prospect of legal fees might simply be another thing to worry about. But when you ask yourself a few questions, it should soon become clear that legal fees aren’t something to worry about. They’re the price you pay for peace of mind.
Ask yourself – can you put a dollar amount on your future? On your value as a person? Most likely not, which means the money you pay now is nothing less than an investment in yourself. It’s an investment in a brighter future and a greater sense of self-worth.
Or, look at it from the other direction. Can you put a dollar amount on the value of having the charges against you reduced or dismissed? Or on living your life free of a criminal record? These things are about more than money.
The fines alone – which could be reduced with the right attorney – might make your legal fees a dollar-for-dollar wash. But when you add in the long-ranging consequences of jail time, probation, and social stigma that come from a conviction, not to mention the impact on your ability to secure employment, you come to see that it’s money well spent.
At The Busbee Legal Group, there are two main fees for our services, which we have explained below:
Initial Retainer Fee
From the first meeting until the trial – if any – we charge one flat fee, so you pay for what you need and only what you need. This fee will be charged upfront, with the full amount due before we can begin to work toward securing your freedom.
We strive to see your charges reduced or dismissed before you ever have to stand before a jury, but sometimes a jury trial is the best way to prove your side of the story. And up until then, your initial fee will cover consultations and assessments that help you understand the charges against you and develop strategies to help beat them. This will also cover our exhaustive pre-trial investigations, representation in the court, negotiations with prosecutors, and all associated legal documents, motions, communications, and support.
Trial Fee
Due before jury selection gets underway, your trial fee will cover the extensive suite of skills and services that Busbee Law Group brings to the courtroom. From initial trial prep to closing statements, these fees cover every aspect of your defense including strategic planning, witness preparation, presentation of evidence, cross-examination, ongoing communication, and every motion and objection necessary to secure a verdict of not guilty.
It is generally recommended to pay the trial fee beforehand, with the funds held in trust and returned if the case is settled before trial. However, it is not required.
Every trial offers its own unique needs, and every case is a different process. Your trial fee covers the majority of what it takes to win. That said, there may be additional fees for third-party representation, ranging from expert witnesses to private investigators to transcriptions. Before engaging with any outside counsel or assistance, your attorney will discuss these fees with you thoroughly.
The fees that you invest in your defense attorney can be the most important investment in your life.
